Brooklyn Moving Tips

As local Brooklyn movers who specialize in residential moving, commercial moving, and both local and long-distance moving services, we know the BK area inside and out. Here are a few pointers from the locals to consider before moving day.

Who Lives in Brooklyn

Brooklyn is the definition of a melting pot of cultures — a vibrant tapestry woven from countless ethnicities and backgrounds. With a population of over 2.6 million and counting, BK welcomes everyone. Young artists, entrepreneurs, established families and retirees, working-class New Yorkers, celebrities, hipsters — you name it! Everyone rubs shoulders here with ease. In fact, Brooklyn’s diverse mix of residents is exactly what gives this borough its world-famous, unparalleled character.

Cost of living in Brooklyn

BK is also generally considered more affordable than Manhattan. Still, the overall cost of living sits around 12% above the national average and is rising. The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment, for example, can range anywhere from $2,000 to $6,000 per month. However, you can still find pockets of affordability. Plus the borough offers a multitude of free and budget-friendly entertainment options, from world-class museums with free admission days to stunning parks, outdoor activities, and so on.

Getting around Brooklyn

NYC is known for its extensive public transportation system, and Brooklyn is no exception. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates a comprehensive network of subways and buses that can take you nearly anywhere in the borough 24/7. Additionally, Brooklyn boasts a growing network of Citi Bike and e-scooter stations. And then there’s Uber, Lyft, and the likes. Plus everything is flat. So while the borough is huge, owning a car is definitely optional.

What is there to do in Brooklyn

And, of course, it’s no secret that Brooklyn is a cultural powerhouse. World-class museums, art galleries, music venues, schools, green spaces, playgrounds, bars, and eateries. Chic neighborhoods like Williamsburg and DUMBO. The Brooklyn Bridge. The Brooklyn Museum and BAM. Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. First-class, second-hand, and all sorts of other shopping. Michelin-starred restaurants and ethnic enclaves serving up authentic global flavors…

The list of things to do in BK is literally endless. But in short, whether you're seeking a vibrant nightlife, a rich cultural experience, or a close-knit community feel — there's a neighborhood in Brooklyn perfectly suited for you. And we here at OZ Moving look forward to welcoming you to it with open arms.

We offer a range of moving services in Brooklyn, including local, long-distance, and commercial moving services, as well as packing, storage and white glove moving services. We also offer specialty services such as piano moving, fine art moving, TV hanging and furniture disassembly and reassembly.

In general, a local move can cost you anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars. However, these are just rough figures and may not reflect the total price of your move.

The cost of our moves can vary depending on:

  • distance;
  • volume;
  • additional services;
  • And other details about the move.

In order to understand how much your move will cost, request a free estimate and be sure to provide as much specific information as possible about your move.

Scheduling a move with us is easy. You can either fill out our online quote form, call us directly, or visit our office to speak with a representative. We will then provide you with a customized moving plan and schedule that fits your specific needs.

Like any other service, it is customary to tip movers if you are satisfied with their performance. 15-20% is an appropriate gratuity. Movers are usually tipped in cash. Check our NYC moving tipping guide for more tips.

If you are moving in the off-peak season (October-April), scheduling a move a week or two in advance will usually be sufficient. But, if you are moving in the peak season (April - September), try to schedule your move three to four weeks in advance.
