First Class

storage solutions

New York locals Oz Moving and Storage have been helping their fellow New Yorkers and newcomers alike make their moving experience as stress-free as possible for nearly 30 years and counting. Facilitating upwards of 15,000 moves yearly and operating throughout all five boroughs (and beyond), we know our hometown like the back of our hand. And Williamsburg, Brooklyn is no exception.

Your Williamsburg Moving Company

Williamsburg lies directly across the East River from Manhattan, over its namesake bridge, on Brooklyn’s west shore. Back in the early 1990s (when OZ was just a humble new kid on the block in NYC moving), Williamsburg was a low-key, somewhat undeveloped lower- and middle-class Brooklyn neighborhood. A mostly residential and formerly industrial working class area, it was characterized by a large and diverse immigrant population (predominantly of Jews, Hispanics, Italians, and Poles), a handful of businesses, and a small independent musician and artist community.

In recent decades, however, Williamsburg would undergo some significant changes. In the early 2000s, the area was rezoned, becoming quickly and increasingly gentrified. With gentrification, the neighborhood would welcome the birth of hipster culture, an ever-flourishing contemporary art and music scene, an increasingly diverse and vibrant nightlife, and a commercial and real estate boom. Williamsburg’s reputation quickly spread both nationally and globally. And as hipster culture encompassed the world, more and more people wanted to call Williamsburg home, and the cost of living there — especially rent prices — skyrocketed. Today, Williamsburg is one of the trendiest, most popular, more affluent, and still most culturally diverse neighborhoods in NYC. It’s home to a little over 150,000 Brooklynites from all walks of life.

Meanwhile, OZ Moving and Storage has gone through some significant changes in recent decades too. We went from a handful of employees and one hand-painted truck in 1993 to being one of NYC’s most reputable and reliable moving companies today, with 80% of our customers being repeat or referrals. The borough of Brooklyn as a whole remains one of our major customers, and more than a few of Williamsburg’s current and former residents have enlisted our help over the years.

Moving To And From All Locations In Williamsburg.

Williamsburg’s 2.2 square miles are situated along the East River, bordered by Greenpoint in the north and Bedford–Stuyvesant in the south. Further east are the neighborhoods of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. The area’s large enough to have three ZIP Codes — 11206, 11211, and 11249, and its area codes are 718, 347, 917, and 929. Its most famous street is Bedford Avenue, but the whole neighborhood — once its own city — is a vast multigrid of diversity. The buildings are mostly low-rise (many of them former warehouses or factories), and some areas are quite spread out, largely residential, and relatively quiet. While others are buzzing with the hustle, bustle, and cultural life that make the neighborhood so famous. But no matter which part of Williamsburg you are or plan to be in, OZ moving knows the terrain. With our teams being dispatched throughout all five boroughs daily (and offices in nearby Brooklyn Heights and Manhattan), we’ve got all three ZIP Codes covered.

Williamsburg moving tips

If you’re moving out of Williamsburg, then you probably already have a good idea of what’s what. But if you’re new in town (or plan to be), here are a few things to know.

Neighborhood points of interest

-Walk or bike over the longest (by 4.5 feet) of the three East River bridges from Brooklyn to Manhattan — aka the world-famous Williamsburg Bridge.

-Grab a brew and learn how it was made at the world-famous Brooklyn Brewery

-Go bowling and/or check out a live show at the NYC-renowned, “genre-defying” bowling alley that is Brooklyn Bowl.

-Grab a round of pints and play a round of Pacman at the original, uber-hip vintage arcade parlor-slash-bar that is Barcade.

-Explore some miniature NYC history (such as antique Statue of Liberty figurines and now-extinct subway tokens) at the City Reliquary Museum.

-Throw a frisbee or a picnic (or barbecue) in Williamsburg’s most famous green getaway, aka McCarren Park.

-For some nice views, volleyball, fine dining, a dog park, and general fun for the whole family, stop by the 5-acre Domino Park.

-And just get lost and explore. Williamsburg is home to dozens of open green spaces, independent art galleries, bookshops, libraries, and religious and cultural community centers. It also has some of NYC’s most eye-catching and breathtaking street art, hundreds of trendy, vintage and other shops, outdoor and indoor flea and art markets, gyms, sports clubs, some of the most unique bars, beer gardens, and eclectic eateries in the world, and more. So a day of just wandering around is sure to help you understand what makes Williamsburg so world-famous.

Interesting facts

-in 1638, the area known as Williamsburg today was purchased by the Dutch West India Company from the Canarsee Indians, the same tribe that is believed to have sold Manhattan. The company called it Boswijck.

-In 1664, the town was anglicized to “Bushwick.'' It was primarily farmland (having a population of roughly 1,000 people) and used to ferry goods to Manhattan by the British and the Dutch.

-In 1802, real estate developer Richard M. Woodhull bought 13 acres of land there, wanting to turn it into a suburb. He renamed the area “Williamsburgh” after his friend Colonel Jonathan Williams.

-Williamsburg was an independent city until 1855 when it was annexed by Brooklyn (or “King’s County”). That’s when it lost the "h" in its spelling too.

-Pfizer Pharmaceuticals got its start in Williamsburg (in 1849).

-Thanks to the construction of the Williamsburg bridge in 1903, Williamsburg became the most densely populated area in NYC by 1917.

-The term ‘hipster’ dates back to the early 1940s when it was used to describe jazz musicians and fans, from the jazz slang term hep (i.e., "up to date").

-As of 2020, an average of over 104,700 vehicles, 6,700 cyclists and 5,500 pedestrians travel over the Williamsburg Bridge daily.

How to Find an apartment to rent

As rent prices in NYC continue to increase drastically, most New Yorkers have grown accustomed to finding a place to live via word-of-mouth. And this is especially true in places like Williamsburg. According to zumper.com, as of November 27, 2022, the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg is $4,100 — or a 12% increase from the previous year. This means that living in Williamsburg is still very much in demand again. So go through the usual online NYC channels (streeteasy.com, renthop.com, zumper, Facebook housing groups, etc.), ask a local friend, and see how locals OZ can help too.

While Williamsburg is not the most expensive neighborhood in Brooklyn (that would be Cobble Hill), the average cost of living there is steep. Due to its proximity to Manhattan, it’s had a large influx of Manhattanites in recent years as a result of growing rent on the island since the pandemic. It’s slightly cheaper than nearby Brooklyn Heights, for example, but more expensive than neighboring East Williamsburg. And due to its still-growing popularity and ongoing gentrification, the average annual income you’ll need to live somewhat comfortably is upwards of $130,000.

25 years of experience moving in Williamsburg

And a few of those vehicles are no doubt OZ trucks (no longer hand-painted, mind you). Named after founder Avi Oz, we have been helping people — hipsters and others — call Williamsburg their home (or former home) since 1993.
