Tools To Make Your Move Easier

Have you ever undertaken a project and not had the correct tools? Whether working on a car engine, fixing a light socket, or putting together a backyard swing set, a lack of proper tools will make any given project nearly impossible.

Now think about a moving project. Have you ever moved using shopping bags and milk crates? Believe it or not, most people have at one time or another. And in every case, the move has become infinitely more difficult through that lack of appropriate tools.

If you’re planning for a move in the near future, whether it’s across town or across the country, be prepared and have the right tools at your disposal. Here are some to consider having on-hand before your big moving date:

moving boxes

Packing Tools

  • Moving Boxes – Sturdy carton boxes or commercial grade corrugated boxes will hold heavier items, and protect against damage.
  • Packing Tape – Heavy grade packing taping for sealing boxes, and keeping important items and/or parts together.
  • Labels – Adhesive tabs can be color coded to designate location in a new home/office, and can clearly identify the contents of a given box.
  • Ziploc bags – Best suited for small parts and hardware.
  • Bubble wrap; blankets; newspapers – Packing materials are vital to sufficiently padding items against breakage during transit, especially fragile pieces such as plates, artwork, and lamps.

Moving Tools

  • Hand truck – For ease in moving and positioning large and/or heavy items, a hand truck is an indispensable asset. Depending on what type of object is to be moved, straps will also be useful for securing items to the hand truck.
  • Dollies – Think of putting a dresser on a skateboard, and the ease with which it can be rolled. Heavy-duty moving dollies are simple to use and vital for getting big pieces where they need to be.
  • Suitable transport – Don’t overlook the proper vehicle for moving! Determine what size truck you need before the move, then plan accordingly.
  • Furniture sliders – The importance of a pack of felt slider discs cannot be overlooked, particularly when a dolly or hand truck is not available.
  • Labor/Help – Technically not a tool, the right people helping you move is nonetheless an important component to facilitate the process. Heavy items require strong bodies!

Unpacking Tools

  • Cutting blade – A sharp utility knife is a mover’s best friend when it comes time to unpack. Professional quality blades are far more durable and cost effective than cheap versions.
  • Screwdriver; ratchet – Somewhere along the line during the unpacking and re-assembly process, you will need a dedicated flathead or Phillips screwdriver. In a pinch, a strong multi-tool will suffice, and will protect against stripped screw heads. A ratchet set will take on wrenching duties, and may also be compatible with screwdriver bits.
