Oz Moving & Storage College Scholarship 2016

Oz Moving & Storage knows that moving to college is tough; leaving your family behind to live on your own is just one of the many challenges that new students face. We also love to give back to the community. That’s why we want to make everything a little bit easier. Oz will award one (1) talented student a $1,000 scholarship this year. We will choose a winner based on a creative multi-media piece or well-written essay entry that relates back to the subject of moving. You only need to pick one! All details on contest details, submission protocol and our scholarship rules, terms, & conditions are below:

OPTION 1: SUBMIT A PICTURE

People love pictures like the one above; an image of a sailboat at sea featuring a quote from one of America’s great novelists Mark Twain. Something about the juxtaposition of the words and the background makes both more powerful. Creating pictures like these doesn’t require photoshop mastery, or a mastery of artistic form. More than anything, it takes the inspiration and creativity to see imagery in language, and messages in the world’s great sights.

This is where you come in; we want you to create a picture like this about moving. It can be about moving to college, moving from your old hometown, seeing your friends or family move, or anything else moving related- it’s up to your creative spirit. Pick an appropriate background that will transform your words, and a quote that compliments that scene like any good subtext would. A great picture will evoke a great story much longer than the quote chosen, much wider than the picture can capture.

1. CHOOSE A PICTURE AND A QUOTE, THEN COMBINE THEM USING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOOLS

§  https://www.canva.com/ (free!)

Be sure that your privacy settings will allow us to see your post! If you’re in doubt, you can tag Oz Moving! (We encourage using Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest as Facebook’s privacy settings can be difficult to figure out.) Bonus points if your quote seems to be engaging with people!

3. GIVE US A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR NEW PICTURE BY ANSWERING ONE QUICK QUESTION FOR US.

You will be asked to write a few paragraphs about your quote. Tell us your inspiration. Fill us in!

OPTION 2: WRITE A SHORT ESSAY

If you’re not feeling picturesque, you may also write us an essay based on the following topic. Bear in mind you still need to pick a quote:

  • Choose a documented quote that you think relates to how you feel about moving to a new town or leaving your hometown for college. Give us the background and context of the quote but then explain why you chose it and how it embodies the feeling of moving to a new city. The essay should be 2-3 [pages (500-750 words)

  • Email the essay as an attachment in .doc or .docx form to scholarship@OzMoving.com. The filename should include “Your Name” as submitted via our google form, and should come from the same email address you filled in on that form.

  • Your essay will be judged on originality, creativity, readability, grammar & spelling, and number of plugs for Oz Moving & Storage (Maybe not that last one.)

FILL OUT THE FORM BELOW TO ENTER. GOOD LUCK!

OUR OZ MOVING SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST WINNER 2015: ALYSSA SNYDER, FROM PARK CITY, UTAH!

Alyssa's entry detailed her tough experience entering a new school at the age of 14, when she was uprooted from a school system she had spent the rest of her life in. "I struggled with this transition for some time. I had a difficult time getting to know people and making friends to begin with, and starting over in a place that was completely new was a nightmare... I often felt alone and out of place." Alyssa's realization and determination to overcome her anxiety was inspiring. "I realized that I was the only one who could change my situation," she said. That turned into a great new group of friends and a sense of comfort in her old surroundings. Allyssa summed it up herself: "It is more than possible to create new bonds and change the way you react to your new experiences. People are more open and kind than one might expect. All you have to do is open yourself up to new experiences and new people." She now attends Montana State University.
