ORGANIZING & LABELING MOVING BOXES

Colored Box Labels

Take a deep breath; it’s time to pack up the whole home. What’s the best way to organize this huge job? Start labelling and planning early. Let’s get to work.

Labeling Moving Boxes

PACK ITEMS BY ROOM

One of the most efficient ways to pack is to take belongings straight from their old place to the place they belong. Kitchen items are going to the new kitchen, for example. Keep all your bedroom, bathroom, living room etc. items together when packing them into boxes. That way, these items can all go straight to their right place upon unpacking, without any re-shuffling needed.

Labeling Each Moving Box

LABEL EVERY BOX

This should go without saying, but can easily be forgotten. Boxes don’t need to be labeled with anything fancier than their room origin, like “Pantry”, “Garage”, or “Basement”. For extra specificity, you can add a number to the boxes if multiple boxes are being packed per room, ie: Kitchen #2, Office #5. If you feel like it, use different colored labels for each room for really easy organization.

SET UP AN INVENTORY LIST

For the compulsive movers, nothing is a better audit than an inventory list, where individual items can be traced back to their boxes. Use the box numbers as headers and list important items as bullet points. An inventory list isn’t necessary for everyone that moves, but those looking to keep detailed track of their items in case of sudden need can utilize a helpful inventory list.

SET ASIDE VITAL ITEMS

Anything that could be needed at a moment’s notice, or that packers will want to unload the moment they get into their new home, should be packed in their own box. Call it a “day one” box, call it a “NEED ASAP” box, whatever it’s called, it should be distinct from the normal inventory. Some items that could be included in this could be medications, hygiene products, toilet paper, etc. whatever each person determines they will need immediately. These items could also be related to service utilities people will want to set up in their new homes on day 1 - tv remotes, cable boxes, internet routers, etc. Perishable items like foods in the fridge should be at the top of this box. These items have to go from fridge to fridge quickly.

Fragile Moving Boxes

LABEL BOXES WITH FRAGILE ITEMS

Boxes with any boxes with breakable items should absolutely be labeled with specific information about the contents of what is inside. Items like vinyl records, glass, TVs, and trophies should be considered fragile items. Label any boxes with fragile items inside with both “FRAGILE” and “N.O.T.” - short for nothing on top.

DON'T LABEL BOXES WITH VALUABLE NAMES

Boxes could be exposed to the outside world at any moment. There’s no good reason to put obvious signs out to thieves. Boxes that are labelled “jewelry” or “computers” scream, “steal me!”
