Ever noticed the pink ribbons on some of our moving trucks? They’re not just for decoration: Oz Moving & Storage is a proud partner of Susan G. Komen Greater NYC, our city’s local chapter of the most prominent foundation dedicated to fighting breast cancer in the world. If you visited Central Park on Saturday, September 10th, you might have thought that Komen Greater NYC’s goal was just to turn the whole town pink. But at the 16th annual Race for the Cure, the goal was much bigger than that.
THE ORGANIZATION
Susan G. Komen Greater NYC is on a mission: No one should die from breast cancer. There are two ways Komen fights breast cancer: national research, and local grants. Komen funds science to find the cures, and donates grants to community-based programs providing critical breast cancer services for medically underserved women in our communities. Those grants make everything from delivering food to women in treatment, to funding transportation to chemo, to providing low-cost mammograms to women at risk, possible.
THE EVENT
The 5K run/walk for the cure is just the beginning. Teams and individuals begin fundraising towards raising money for their 3.1 mile run very early on, and continue through October 31. Since Komen’s first NYC run in 1991 with 2500 women participating, nearly 400,000 people have joined the cause, racing for the cure to raise money and to help create more survivors. New Yorkers have raised $80 million to fund local programs to help thousands of women and their families, and fund national research to find the cure.
HOW OZ HELPS THE CAUSE
Oz provides pro bono moving services for two of Komen’s biggest events throughout the year: the Race (for the Cure), and their Impact Awards luncheon. By absorbing the moving costs for Komen Greater NYC, Oz is making sure more money is devoted to Komen Greater NYC’s mission. In addition, Oz promotes Komen Greater NYC on several of our moving trucks with a visual advertisement, exposing Komen to thousands of New Yorkers on the street every single day. Together, Oz & Komen are dedicated to creating more survivors.
